Food to Go Packaging Engineer

On-site: Rochester, NY

Full Time: FLSA Exempt

Compensation: $60,000-$80,000 annually

Position Summary:

Join us in this unique opportunity to work in an innovative environment within the world of material science and packaging! As a Food to Go Engineer, you will make an impact through designing, testing, and qualifying new package formats for ProAmpac’s Food to Go (FTG) Platform.

This position works closely with Sales, Product Development, Marketing, and customers to:

  • Coordinate laboratory tests for various flexible packaging products

  • Conduct fit-for-use testing, interpret analytical results

  • Develop recommended packaging prototypes and die lines based on testing

  • Provide analytical reports with recommendations to requestors

Job Description:

  • Design, test, and modify packages for our FFTG Platform in conjunction with production capabilities.

  • Create die lines and production die cut files for production in ArtiosCAD.

  • Create new packaging to meet customer needs, working with production and equipment manufacturers to analyze feasibility.

  • Project Organization – Logging projects, developing a work plan, timeline to complete and weekly updates.

  • Professional written and oral communication with customers, suppliers, OEMs and teammates

  • Understand and utilize design software, packaging materials, test equipment and machinery for the FFTG Platform.

  • Assemble test materials and equipment to expedite test procedures and prioritize samples as they arrive.

  • Utilize equipment in the Packaging Lab to run DOE’s on packaging utilizing different cooking/holding parameters as requested by customers internally and externally.

  • Analyze data using statistical analysis.

  • Compile, interpret, report, and make recommendations based on results of tests and analyses.

  • Evaluate customer’s current packaging and suggest ProAmpac FFTG options for food quality/shelf-life improvements.

  • Work with customers to adjust operating procedures when suggesting FFTG packaging (i.e. new hold temperatures, new cook parameters).

  • Follow up correspondence after customer visits for visibility to management.

  • Access the CRM to follow opportunities and create DASL requests.

  • Maintain Standard Operating Procedures and make recommendations for their improvement.

  • Responsible for instruments operations (including cleaning, calibration, and maintenance) and monitoring the quality of the laboratory results.

  • Responsible for maintaining inventory and space for freezers and refrigerators.

  • Responsible for cleanliness of labs, equipment, freezers, and refrigerators keeping them customer viewing ready.

  • Monitor consumables needed in the lab and request/ purchase replacements (i.e., gas, paper board, films, cleaning solutions)

  • Participate in scientific discussion and critical thinking.

  • Correspond with partner universities to run tests that CIC does not offer.

  • Provide tours and information to CIC guests.

  • Submit justification for changing or adding new lab equipment and supplies.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

Work primarily in a climate controlled indoor environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential. Hearing protection, safety shoes, vision and other protection required when in manufacturing areas.

This role operates in a professional office environment that may have some exposure to a manufacturing environment. Employee is rarely exposed to non-toxic/nuisance smells from chemicals, airborne dust, moving mechanical parts, high noise levels and hot/humid environmental conditions in the manufacturing areas.

This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands/fingers to type, hold, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

Qualifications, Education, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in design, engineering, or equivalent plus 1-2 years’ experience working in a lab environment; 3-5 years’ experience is preferred.

  • Good mathematical, analytical, and hands on skills

  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point), Outlook email and calendar.

  • Solid working knowledge of ArtiosCAD

  • Maintains strict confidentiality and protects privacy of confidential/sensitive information.

  • Exceptional time management and organization skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously establishing priorities to meet deadlines.

  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal, written, and presentations) with executive leadership, staff, and internal and external clients in both individual and team environments.

  • Shows independent and self-discretion. Proactive; exercises sound judgment and decision making; able to identify problems and needs and develop solutions and/or options.
